Engine’s Arena – The Motor Cylinder

It is much easier to learn how to drive a car than it is to comprehend how gasoline or diesel purchased from a gas station can make your car work. Although a bit of information is given about how vehicles work in a driving course, more often than not, this is taken for granted as the important thing in these courses is on driving.

Although mechanisms involved have evolved through the years and may even seem too complicated to be understood by the layman, we will try to simplify the seemingly complex process of how engines work with a focus on motor cylinder.

All engines use a piston to provide power to some moving mechanism, usually a crankshaft for motor vehicles. A cylinder is used to house the piston. This is where combustion takes place. The familiar four-stroke cycle of intake, compression, power and exhaust occurs here. We will try to explain this cycle, taking for example a gasoline engine.

On the first cycle referred to as Intake, air is drawn into the cylinder. On the next cycle called Compression, this air and fuel combination is compressed into the cylinder. On the third cycle known as power, a spark plug ignites this mixture. On the final cycle named Exhaust, the products of combustion are taken out of the cylinder. The cycle then repeats itself. Take note that this cycle happens very quickly, within a matter of seconds.

The four-stroke cycle is what makes the vehicle run. It all happens in a motor cylinder. So now you can just imagine how important this part is on an engine. Since it takes the brunt of the combustion, naturally, this part should be made of sturdy metal. And it is so.

Most engines are made of cast aluminum or cast iron and the cylinders are of the same metal. Some designs, though, line the cylinder with a stronger metal, usually an alloy, or just coat it with a wear-resistant coating.

There is a process called ‘cylinder sleeving’ which is used to fix cylinder walls after being worn from use. Usually made of iron alloys, the sleeves, as they are called, are inserted and pressed into place in the cylinder. This is one of the maintenance procedures given to a motor cylinder.

Since combustion generates heat, the design of an engine considers highly how the cylinders are cooled. Some are air-cooled, others water-cooled, and still others are coolant-cooled. A coolant is a liquid chemical specially formulated to provide cooling to engines.

The two most common arrangements for cylinders are the in-line and V-shape. In the former, the cylinders are placed in one line only and in the latter, they are placed on opposite sides of the engine forming a letter V.

Besides the arrangement, the number of cylinders in an engine also varies depending on the vehicle’s design. For a car, the most compact is the four-cylinder engine. Other manufacturers have six and eight-cylinder engines. Formula One race cars even have up to 12 cylinders.
